Mexico City, a vibrant metropolis teeming with culture and flavor, is not just for digital nomads or couples seeking a romantic getaway. It’s a fantastic destination for families, offering many kid-friendly experiences that everyone will adore. So, what are the best things to do in Mexico City? ¡Vámonos!
1. The Best Things to Do in Mexico City: Eat All the Food
To kick off your day, indulge in breakfast of guava pastries at Panadería Rosetta or chilaquiles at El Cardinal. Chilaquiles (a traditional Mexican dish of fried corn tortila strips simmered in a red or green salsa) are a must-try when in Mexico.
When exploring the best things to do in Mexico City, eating your weight in tacos is a no-brainer! To maximize your taco-eating time, join a tour like the one we enjoyed from Eat Mexico. From tacos de guisados to el pastor, everything we tried was delicious, and we got way more variety than we would have on our own. Hungry for more? Here’s another taco tour you might enjoy.
Of course, one day of tacos is never enough. So, we also returned to El Hildalguense, a spot we loved on our first visit to the city. It’s renowned for its weekends-only lamb barbacoa. Because our schedule was jam-packed, we had to squeeze it in for breakfast. Despite the early hour, it was just as good as I remembered. The rich, aromatic lamb melts in your mouth, and you should also save room for the heavenly queso asada, a broiled cheese with refried beans.
Mexico City is undoubtedly one of the best places to sample street food. Try street my food favorites, elotes and mango with lime and chili. If you still have room, visit El Moro to snag a gigantic sugar-coated churro or a cup of rich hot chocolate.
2. The Best Things to do in Mexico City: Explore the Many Markets
One of the absolute best things to do in Mexico City is to wander one of the many markets. La Ciudadela Handicraft Market offers a treasure trove of handmade wonders to captivate the entire family. From vibrant textiles to intricate crafts, this market promises a unique experience for kids and adults alike. My shopping was only limited by my ability to fit things in a carry-on – I wanted everything!
Venture further to Mercado San Juan, one of the city’s largest food markets, where you’ll discover the typical produce, flowers, and unusual items like bugs and even lion meat. You’ll get even more out of your market experience on a tour. We loved our market tour with Devoured on a previous adults-only visit to the city, or you could check out this La Merced market tour.
3. The Best Things to Do in Mexico City: Take a Break to Enjoy Nature
After a busy day, a serene stroll through Bosque de Chapultepec is just what you need. This sprawling urban park will make you forget you’re in the heart of a major city. Let the kids run free as you explore this oasis, discovering hidden gems like museums, lakes, and playgrounds. Before leaving the park, consider a stop at the Museo Nacional de Antropología It’s filled with artifacts of Mexico’s fascinating history.
4. The Best Things to Do in Mexico City: Frida Kahlo’s House
No visit to Mexico City would be complete without a visit to Casa Azul, the Frida Kahlo Museum. Frida and her husband, muralist Diego Rivera, are arguably the best-known Mexican artists in America, thanks partly to the Salma Hayek biopic. Casa Azul is the house Kahlo grew up in, and it includes not only examples of her art but also artifacts from her life such as her beautiful dresses.
5. The Best Things to Do in Mexico City at Night: Lucha Libra
Ever seen Nacho Libre? Experience the energy of Lucha Libre wrestling for a thrilling night out. I ran out of time to do this, but it’s high on my list next time I visit. It is, by all accounts, a wild but family-friendly activity. It’s definitely one of the best things to do in Mexico City.
Extend the Adventure: San Miguel de Allende
If your adventurous spirit craves more, consider a luxury coach ride just 3 1/2 hours away to the beautiful town of San Miguel de Allende. Check out our full write-up on visiting San Miguel de Allende with kids.
