Day 1: Stylish Tbilisi — The Start of Your Georgia Itinerary
Your one-week Georgia itinerary kicks off in Tbilisi, the capital city. Tbilisi is an exciting blend of old and new, with modern cafes and art galleries nestled between ancient churches and cobblestone streets. Having visited in 1990, I was struck by how much Tbilisi has evolved from the Soviet era.
Our Tbilisi travel adventure began in the Old Town, where we explored Narikala Fortress and the area where you’ll find most of the Sulphur Baths. Visiting the baths is a unique cultural experience if you have the time, but unfortunately, we didn’t. We also visited Metekhi Church (remember to cover your shoulders and knees, and for women, cover your hair). It’s highly recommended to bring a scarf to avoid using shared ones at churches. Consider

- Afternoon: We strolled through the quirky Dry Bridge Flea Market where we bought some Soviet-era memorabilia
- Evening: Tbilisi’s café culture is lively and inviting, perfect for unwinding after a busy day of sightseeing. The night before our tour kicked off, we enjoyed a tasting at the Wine Library. Then, we feasted on the hearty local cuisine at Ethno Tsiskvili, which also featured live music and dance performances. The following evening, we loved Keto & Kote for a big-city dining experience.
- Stay: We stayed at the incredibly chic Stamba Hotel, a perfect reflection of the city’s modern edge. I highly recommend this gorgeous hotel, which is located in a former publishing house.
- Do: Get your hands dirty in a Khachapuri and Khingali Cooking Class, or skip the cooking and go straight to the eating with a Tbilisi food tour.

Day 2: From Tbilisi to Mtskheta and Ateni Valley — A Step Back in Time
On Day 2 of this Georgia itinerary, we traveled to Mtskheta, the ancient capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is a must-see, although after several church visits, you might begin to feel a little “churched-out.” Nevertheless, the significance of these religious sites is undeniable.
- Lunch: We had an unforgettable meal at Andro Barnovi’s Wine Artisans, where the wine maker treated us to a barrel tasting followed by a wonderful lunch. Sharing meals with locals was a highlight of our Georgia itinerary. Andro and his winemaker friends even treated us to some impromptu wine-fueled folksongs.
- Afternoon: We explored the ancient cave town of Uplistsikhe, before heading to Ateni Valley, where we spent the evening with a local winemaker’s family.
- Stay: We stayed at a local guesthouse in Ateni Valley, hosted by a winemaker. While their hospitality was undeniable, the accommodation was my least favorite. Unfortunately, the room had an uncomfortable bed and threadbare towels and the surprisingly loud sound of club music carried on the wind from another hotel throughout dinner. Day 3: Journey to Kazbegi — The Majestic Highlands Are a Highlight of Your Georgia Itinerary
Kazbegi is one of the most beautiful regions in the Republic of Georgia, and Day 3 of our 7-day Georgia itinerary took us through the breathtaking Caucasus Mountains. Along the way, we stopped at Ananuri Castle, a fortress with incredible views of the surrounding landscape.
- Highlights: In Kazbegi, we hiked through Juta Valley, a picturesque trail that felt like stepping into a postcard. Later, we hiked again to the Gveleti Waterfalls. Both these hikes were relatively strenuous but didn’t require any technical gear. Comfortable athletic shoes are sufficient.
- Lunch: After a 900-foot climb, we had lunch at Fifth Season, with a side of epic scenery.
- Stay: We stayed at hip Rooms Hotel Kazbegi, a stylish retreat offering stunning views of the mountains and a luxurious yet cozy atmosphere. I particularly enjoyed the interesting art hanging throughout the hotel.
- Dinner: A 10-minute walk from the hotel, Qondari offered great meatballs, chocolate cake, and homemade wine.
Day 4: Full Day in Kazbegi Highlands — Gergeti and Tsdo Village
Day 4 of this Georgia itinerary took us to the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, perched high above the town of Kazbegi. The views from the church are truly spectacular and are undoubtedly one of the highlights of this 7-day Georgia itinerary.
- Lunch: We helped prepare khinkali, Georgia’s famous dumplings, with a local family in Tsdo Village. Georgian hospitality, especially during meals, was one of the most memorable parts of our trip. The veal stew they served was the most delicious meal we ate on our trip, and the experience felt quite special.
- Stay: Another night at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi allowed us to relax and take in more of the stunning Caucasus scenery.
- Dinner: We were almost scared off by the hotel restaurant’s bad Google ratings, but we’re glad we ignored them. The blasting club music is a bit weird, but the food and cocktails did not disappoint.
Day 5: From Kazbegi to Telavi — Entering Georgia’s Wine Region
On Day 5 of our Georgia itinerary, we headed to Kakheti, Georgia’s most famous wine region. En route, we visited Kvetera Church, a hidden 8th-century gem. The focus of this day was truly on the food and wine, which are essential parts of the Georgia travel experience.
- Lunch: We toured Lagazi winery and enjoyed lunch and natural wines with the winemaker.
- Evening: I spent dinner with another local maker of natural wines at Thogonidize winery. I particularly enjoyed this visit. His home is filled with his own art, and he was very precise about what went together, for example, pairing the perfect cheese and jam.
- Stay: We stayed at the sprawling Radisson Tsinandali Estate, which offers comfort in the heart of Kakheti’s wine country and beautiful vineyard views.
Pro Tip: Visiting wineries is not like in the US. There were no giant tasting rooms on our tours. Instead, we were checking out the qvevri (earthenware vessel used for storing and aging wine) with the winemakers. These experiences definitely must be booked in advance.
Day 6: Telavi to Sighnaghi — The Republic of Georgia’s Hidden Gem
Perched above the Alazani Valley, Sighnaghi is a charming hilltop town known for its picturesque streets and stunning views. Day 6 of our 7-day Georgia itinerary took us through this hidden gem.
- Lunch: We dined and wine-tasted al fresco at Cherkedze and sampled craft beer at Lost Ridge Ranch.
- Afternoon Activity: A two-hour horse-riding tour provided stunning views of the countryside, adding an adventurous end to the day. I was a little worried when this started because it wasn’t very scenic, but the ride eventually takes you to some pretty mountain vistas.
- Stay: We enjoyed a night at the Lost Ridge Inn, a cozy, unique hotel with scenic surroundings.
Day 7: Sighnaghi to Tbilisi — Wrapping Up Your Georgia Itinerary
On the final day of this Georgia itinerary, we explored Sighnaghi before visiting Bodbe Monastery, home to the remains of St. Nino, the woman credited with bringing Christianity to Georgia. Our last stop was at Pheasant’s Tears, a boutique winery renowned for its organic wines.
- Lunch & Wine Tasting: The food and wine at Pheasant’s Tears were exceptional, with an emphasis on organic, local ingredients and traditional Georgian winemaking techniques. Interestingly, the owner is American, and he’s credited with helping Georgian wine gain more international notoriety. Learn more about him here.
- Stay: We returned to Tbilisi and wrapped up the journey with one final night at Rooms Hotel Tbilisi, a beautiful blend of modern luxury and Georgian heritage.

Georgia is such a unique country to visit, full of beautiful landscapes and ancient traditions. My parents have visited several times, so I’ve heard so many great things that it’s been on my bucket list for a while. However, I have visited Georgian restaurants around the world a few times, and let me tell you, I’m obsessed with Georgian khachapuri!
